The 26th of September saw the culmination of the first phase and prize giving ceremony for the ‘Women in Construction’ competition that a number of teams from St Ambrose Barlow High School had entered.
In a collaboration with Aim Higher and the CIOB, organised through the School of Construction and Property Management at the University of Salford; involving undergraduate students from: School of Construction and Property Management, further education students from Pendleton and Eccles Colleges, a class of Year 8 pupils from St. Ambrose Barlow rose to the challenge to design and create a 3D model.
Over a six week period the pupils had to look at a design problem and create ‘A Home for Runaway Children’. The teams
were expected to develop solutions that tackled problems such as: the environment, educational needs, health and safety and emotional needs,
finally producing an architectural model of their scheme. Also, the teams were asked to write a report which reflected upon what they
had learned during the process.
With the experience gained in industry and from their degree courses from the University students and the support from the Sixth Form students
the year 8 teams produced some excellent work.
Mr.Matthew Connolly the class teacher said “It has been a fantastic project, hard work but fueled by the enthusiasm of the pupils who gave up their breaks, dinners, holidays, and after school time we have had a magnificent outcome.”
The winning teams from Ambrose were invited to an award ceremony at the Imperial War Museum North where they also got a tour around the Daniel Libeskind designed building. Frances Jodrell from Salford University said “I was very impressed by the quality of work from Ambrose Barlow and the excellent behaviour they showed throughout the project. The additional element of the power point presentations was far and above anything that we expected. This is an exciting start to future collaborations between the School of Construction and Property Management, Colleges and Schools.”
